
Gezahegn Mekonnen Demissie
Gezahegn Mekonnen Demissie is an Ethiopian journalist, filmmaker, and cultural advocate whose work bridges storytelling, media, and community engagement across continents. Now based in Toronto, he produces a television series for OMNI Channel and hosts a radio show and podcast under New Perspective አዲስ ቅኝት, platforms dedicated to amplifying diverse voices and diaspora narratives.
Gezahegn serves as a board member of PEN Canada, where he also chairs the Writers in Exile group, advocating for freedom of expression and supporting writers who have been displaced by conflict, censorship, and political pressure. Prior to this role, he contributed to literary and press freedom efforts as a board director at PEN Ethiopia. He is also the Executive Director of Bridge Entertainment, where he continues to develop film and media projects that highlight underrepresented stories.
His creative and journalistic work frequently explores themes of exile, identity, and belonging, particularly reflecting the experiences of Ethiopian and broader African diaspora communities in Canada. He is the co-writer of The Uncaged Voice, an anthology showcasing powerful literary works by writers in exile supported by PEN Canada.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to journalism and his dedicated service to the Ethiopian community, Gezahegn was honored with an award from the National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada in 2019.
