The Ethiopian Journalists Association in Canada was founded in response to the growing suppression of press freedom and massive exile of Ethiopian journalists over the past three decades, particularly since 2018, as many media workers have been forced to flee the country due to threats, persecution and reprisals linked to their reporting.
To strengthen and support Ethiopian journalists in Canada and in exile by promoting press freedom, professional solidarity, capacity building and international advocacy for an independent and safe media environment.
A strong, independent and globally connected Ethiopian journalism community that contributes to democratic governance, human rights and informed public discourse in Ethiopia and within the diaspora.
To build a professional and sustainable association that protects and empowers Ethiopian journalists in Canada and abroad, amplifies under-reported media freedom issues in Ethiopia, and creates a credible platform for engagement with Canadian and international media and advocacy institutions.
The Association works to build a strong professional network for Ethiopian journalists in Canada, promote freedom of expression and media independence, provide mentorship and skills development, and advocate on critical issues affecting the Ethiopian media landscape.
